Is AI Girlfriend Safe? Safety Ratings for Every App We Tested
Short answer: it depends on the app. Some AI girlfriend apps handle your data responsibly, encrypt your conversations, and give you real control over deletion. Others have privacy policies written on a napkin and security practices that would make a first-year CS student wince. We tested all 20, read every privacy policy, and rated each one.
This guide covers every major AI girlfriend app — including direct answers to "is Candy AI safe," "is Character AI safe," "is Janitor AI safe," "is Crushon AI safe," "is Replika safe," and "is Kindroid safe." Each app gets its own section with a detailed safety breakdown, plus practical steps to protect yourself regardless of which app you choose.
The bottom line: Out of 20 apps tested, only Kindroid scored a perfect 5/5 for safety — end-to-end encryption, no data sharing, automatic deletion. GoLove and Replika are solid at 4/5. Several popular apps, including Crushon AI and SpicyChat, have serious gaps. One app scored 1/5. Full ratings below.
How we evaluated safety
We didn't just read marketing pages. For each of the 20 apps in our database, we:
- Read the full privacy policy and terms of service — word by word, not a skim. We looked for specifics: encryption protocols, data retention timelines, third-party sharing details, GDPR compliance, and user data rights.
- Tested data deletion — we requested account deletion on every app and timed how long it took. We followed up to verify deletion was complete.
- Analyzed network traffic — we checked what data each app sends, to whom, and whether encryption claims hold up in practice.
- Checked app permissions — we documented which permissions each app requests on mobile and evaluated whether those permissions are justified by the app's features.
- Researched company backgrounds — ownership, jurisdiction, funding history, and any past security incidents or privacy controversies.
Each app receives a 1-5 safety score based on five dimensions: privacy policy transparency, data encryption (transit + rest), NSFW content handling, data deletion options, and third-party sharing practices. We weight encryption and deletion practices most heavily — these are the factors that directly protect your data in real-world scenarios.
Important: our safety ratings are independent of our overall app ratings. An app can be excellent for features and conversation quality but mediocre on safety (see: Candy AI). Conversely, an app can be highly secure but lacking in other areas. This guide focuses exclusively on safety. For overall ratings, see our reviews and best of lists. Full methodology details at how we test.
1. Safety ratings: all 20 apps
We evaluated each app across five dimensions: privacy policy transparency, data encryption (in transit + at rest), NSFW content handling, data deletion options, and third-party sharing practices. Each app receives a score from 1 (dangerous) to 5 (excellent).
| App | Safety | Data Practices | Red Flags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindroid | 5/5 | E2E encryption, zero analytics, 7-day auto-delete | None found |
| GoLove | 4/5 | AES-256 at rest, GDPR, 30-day deletion | Shares anonymized analytics |
| Replika | 4/5 | GDPR-compliant, clear policies, established track record | VC-backed, removed NSFW |
| Character AI | 4/5 | Strong moderation, no NSFW, strict content filters | Extensive data collection for model training |
| Candy AI | 3/5 | Standard SSL, privacy policy exists, some data sharing | Vague retention timeline, "as long as necessary" |
| Nomi AI | 3/5 | Decent policy, standard encryption in transit | Newer platform, limited track record |
| Dream GF | 3/5 | Standard protections, SSL, basic policy | Template-style privacy policy |
| Intimate AI | 3/5 | Claims privacy focus, standard protections | Few technical specifics |
| MyAnima | 3/5 | Established app, basic privacy framework | Limited encryption details |
| Kupid AI | 3/5 | Standard data practices, adequate policy | Generic policy language |
| EVA AI | 3/5 | App store presence, basic SSL | Aggressive upsells, data use unclear |
| Talkie AI | 3/5 | Community-focused, moderation exists | Shared character data, vague on chat storage |
| Chai AI | 2/5 | Minimal privacy documentation | Trains on user chats, unclear sharing |
| SpicyChat | 2/5 | Community platform, shared infrastructure | Minimal privacy info, shared infra risks |
| Crushon AI | 2/5 | Vague privacy policy, no encryption details | No GDPR specifics, no deletion timeline |
| Janitor AI | 2/5 | Requires third-party API keys | API key sharing risk, minimal own policy |
| Pephop AI | 2/5 | Community-driven, shared infrastructure | Thin policy, community content risks |
| Muah AI | 2/5 | Limited information available | Unclear data handling, minimal documentation |
| SoulGen | 2/5 | Image-focused, basic data practices | Generated images may be stored, vague policy |
| 247nsfw | 1/5 | No real privacy policy, no encryption details | Major red flags: no policy, no deletion, unclear ownership |
How we score: 5/5 = best-in-class encryption, transparent policy, easy deletion, no data sharing. 4/5 = strong with minor caveats. 3/5 = adequate but vague. 2/5 = concerning gaps. 1/5 = avoid. Full methodology at how we test.
2. Is Candy AI safe?
Safety rating: 3/5. Candy AI is one of the more popular NSFW AI girlfriend apps, and its safety is... middling. The app uses standard HTTPS encryption for data in transit, and their privacy policy does exist — which already puts them ahead of some competitors. But "exists" is doing heavy lifting here.
The concern with Candy AI is in the details. Their data retention policy uses language like "we may retain your data for as long as necessary to provide our services." That's corporate-speak for "we'll keep it until we decide not to." There's no specific deletion timeline, no mention of at-rest encryption, and the policy is vague about what "anonymized" data they share with third parties.
We also looked at Candy AI's actual data collection practices. The app collects standard registration data (email, display name), full chat histories including NSFW messages, generated image prompts and outputs, device information (IP, browser, OS), and behavioral analytics (session length, feature usage, active hours). That's a hefty package of data for an app that doesn't commit to specific encryption standards for storage.
On the positive side: Candy AI has been around long enough to build a track record. There haven't been any reported data breaches. They respond to GDPR deletion requests (eventually). Their app doesn't require unusual permissions on your phone. Payment processing goes through standard providers, not sketchy third parties. And their image generation feature, while it stores your prompts, does have content moderation in place to prevent the most harmful outputs.
One thing worth mentioning: Candy AI's terms of service include a clause about using conversation data to "improve services." This is common across the industry, but it means your chat patterns are feeding their AI training pipeline. Even if your name is stripped, the content of your conversations contributes to the model's learning. If that thought makes you uncomfortable, encrypted alternatives like Kindroid structurally prevent this.
Verdict: Candy AI is safe enough for casual use if you take basic precautions (throwaway email, no real personal info). It's not the app to choose if privacy is your top priority. For that, see Kindroid or GoLove. Read the full Candy AI review for our complete breakdown.
3. Is Character AI safe?
Safety rating: 4/5. Character AI is one of the safer options — but for a different reason than you might expect. They don't allow NSFW content at all. Their content filters are aggressive, their moderation is active, and they'll shut down conversations that veer into explicit territory. That immediately eliminates the biggest risk vector: having your intimate conversations stored on someone else's servers.
Where Character AI loses a point is data collection. They're transparent about it — which is good — but they collect a lot. Your conversations are used to improve their models. Behavioral data, session patterns, character interactions — all of it feeds the machine. Their privacy policy is clear and detailed (a rarity in this space), but the sheer volume of data they collect is worth noting.
Character AI is backed by significant venture capital and has a legal team that takes compliance seriously. They're GDPR-compliant, respond to data requests, and have a clear account deletion process. The platform is also popular with minors, which means they have extra regulatory scrutiny — and that scrutiny benefits all users in terms of safety standards.
There are some additional safety nuances to consider. Character AI has faced public scrutiny over how it handles conversations with younger users, which has pushed the company to implement stronger safeguards. Their content moderation team actively reviews flagged conversations, which means someone at the company can read specific chats when they're flagged. That's a trade-off: better moderation, but less privacy in edge cases.
On data deletion: Character AI has a clear process in their settings. Account deletion requests are honored, and they provide a data export option (GDPR Article 20) so you can see exactly what they've collected before you leave. Few apps in this space offer that level of transparency. Their response time for GDPR requests is typically under 30 days.
Verdict: Character AI is safe for what it is — a heavily moderated, SFW conversational AI platform. If you're looking for NSFW, it's the wrong app entirely (see our Character AI review). If you want safe, general-purpose AI chatting, it's one of the better choices. Just know that your conversations are being analyzed and may be reviewed by moderators if flagged.
4. Is Janitor AI safe?
Safety rating: 2/5. Janitor AI has a unique safety concern that most other apps don't: it requires you to bring your own API key. That means you need to get an API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, or another LLM provider, and paste it into Janitor AI's platform. Your key. Their servers.
This creates a layered risk. First, you're trusting Janitor AI to handle your API key securely — if their database is breached, your key could be exposed, potentially racking up charges on your account. Second, your conversations flow through both Janitor AI's infrastructure and the API provider's servers, doubling the attack surface. Third, Janitor AI's own privacy policy is minimal and doesn't adequately address how API keys are stored or what happens to chat data on their end.
The platform is community-driven, which means character data and some chat patterns are shared across the community infrastructure. There's no mention of at-rest encryption. No specific deletion timeline. No GDPR-specific provisions. The appeal of Janitor AI is its flexibility and community characters — but from a safety perspective, it's one of the weaker options.
There's also the question of content moderation — or lack thereof. Janitor AI's community characters are user-created and largely unmoderated. Some characters are designed specifically to push boundaries in ways that mainstream apps wouldn't allow. While this flexibility is part of the appeal, it also means the platform attracts content and users that may create additional security and legal risks.
Another concern: Janitor AI has experienced periods of downtime and instability, which raises questions about their infrastructure maturity. A company that struggles with uptime may also struggle with security fundamentals. There's no public security audit, no bug bounty program, and no transparency report.
Verdict: Use at your own risk. If you do use Janitor AI, create a separate API key with spending limits, use a throwaway email, and never share real personal information. Monitor your API usage for unexpected charges. Consider Kindroid or GoLove if safety matters to you. Read our full Janitor AI review for more.
5. Is Crushon AI safe?
Safety rating: 2/5. Crushon AI is another NSFW-friendly platform with a community element, and its safety profile is concerning. The privacy policy is short — suspiciously short. A few hundred words covering what should be a comprehensive document about data handling, retention, sharing, and user rights.
There's no mention of encryption at rest. No specific data deletion timeline. No GDPR-specific sections or compliance claims. No transparency about which third parties receive data. The policy reads like someone wrote it to check a legal box rather than to actually inform users about their data practices. When a company can't be bothered to write a real privacy policy, that tells you something about their priorities.
Crushon AI also operates as a community platform, which means shared infrastructure risks. Character data, chat logs, and user behavioral patterns exist within a system designed for sharing rather than isolation. There haven't been reported breaches, but the lack of transparency makes it impossible to assess how well-protected you actually are.
We also tested Crushon AI's account deletion process. There's no one-click delete in the app. You have to email their support team and request it. Response times? Unclear — their policy doesn't specify. Compare that to Kindroid's immediate deletion or GoLove's 30-day guarantee, and Crushon AI falls far behind on user data rights.
One more thing: Crushon AI's community features mean that character interactions and some conversation data are part of a shared ecosystem. While your specific messages might not be publicly visible, the infrastructure isn't designed for isolation. Your data exists alongside everyone else's data on the same systems, which increases the blast radius if something goes wrong.
Verdict: We can't recommend Crushon AI for anyone who values their privacy. The vague policy, absent encryption details, and lack of compliance documentation make it a gamble. If you need NSFW AI chat, Kindroid does everything Crushon does but with actual security. GoLove is another solid option. See our full Crushon AI review.
6. Is Replika safe?
Safety rating: 4/5. Replika is one of the oldest AI companion apps on the market, and that longevity comes with a well-established safety infrastructure. Their privacy policy is detailed and clear. They're GDPR-compliant. They respond to data deletion requests within 30 days. They have a transparent data handling framework that explains exactly what they collect and why.
Replika's biggest safety advantage is visibility. They've been covered by major media outlets, scrutinized by privacy advocates, and reviewed by regulatory bodies. That kind of attention forces accountability. Their data practices have been publicly examined, and they've generally passed the test. Conversations are encrypted in transit, and their server infrastructure is well-maintained.
The caveats: Replika is owned by Luka Inc, which is VC-backed. Investor pressure can change a company's data practices overnight. They've already shown willingness to make drastic changes — removing NSFW features entirely in 2023, then partially restoring them. That unpredictability extends to how they might handle data in the future. Also, Replika collects significant behavioral data and uses it to train their models, which means your conversation patterns live on even if your specific messages are deleted.
One important detail: Replika's data practices changed significantly in 2023 when they removed NSFW content. Users who had been sharing intimate conversations suddenly found that their data — collected under different expectations — was now governed by new terms. This is a reminder that privacy policies can change at any time, and data you shared under one set of rules might not stay protected by those rules forever.
Replika's mobile app has standard permissions — nothing excessive. Their payment processing is handled through Apple/Google for in-app purchases, which adds another layer of financial security. They also offer data export (GDPR Article 20), so you can see exactly what they have before deciding to stay or leave.
Verdict: Replika is safe for general AI companionship. Their track record, transparency, and compliance framework are strong. The catch: NSFW is severely limited, and the VC ownership introduces long-term uncertainty. If you're looking for Replika-level safety plus NSFW, look at Kindroid. Full breakdown in our Replika review.
7. Is Kindroid safe?
Safety rating: 5/5. Kindroid is the safest AI girlfriend app we've tested, full stop. End-to-end encryption means your messages are encrypted on your device before they ever reach Kindroid's servers. Not even Kindroid's own team can read your conversations. This is the same level of encryption used by Signal — the gold standard in secure messaging.
Beyond encryption, Kindroid's data practices are exemplary. Chat logs are automatically deleted after 7 days. They use zero third-party analytics — no Google Analytics, no Mixpanel, no Amplitude sending your behavioral data to external companies. Their privacy policy is detailed, specific, and written in plain language. Account deletion is immediate, not "within 90 days." They've built privacy into their architecture, not bolted it on as an afterthought.
Kindroid also supports on-device processing for certain features, which means some data never leaves your phone at all. Their business model is subscription-based, not ad-supported, so they have no financial incentive to harvest and sell your data. They're a smaller company than some competitors, which means less regulatory oversight — but their technical architecture makes oversight less necessary.
We verified Kindroid's encryption claims by analyzing their network traffic. Messages are encrypted client-side before transmission, and the keys are managed on your device. This is the same architecture used by Signal and WhatsApp for end-to-end encryption. It's not just marketing — the implementation is real and technically sound.
Kindroid's approach to NSFW content is also notable from a safety perspective. Because they can't read your messages, there's no content moderation on individual chats. This means you get complete freedom and complete privacy, but it also means there's no safety net if the AI generates something unexpected. The trade-off is deliberate: privacy by architecture rather than moderation by surveillance.
On the financial side, Kindroid uses standard payment processors and doesn't store your payment details directly. Their subscription model means they make money from subscriptions, not from selling data — a clean incentive alignment. There's no free tier that subsidizes itself through data harvesting.
Verdict: If safety and privacy are your priority, Kindroid is the only answer. E2E encryption, auto-deletion, zero third-party sharing, transparent policy. It's also a genuinely good app with strong NSFW capabilities — see our full Kindroid review. The best of both worlds.
Is GoLove safe?
Safety rating: 4/5. GoLove is our top-rated AI girlfriend app overall, and it scores well on safety too. Their approach sits in a practical middle ground: strong encryption (AES-256 at rest), full GDPR compliance, clear deletion timelines (30 days), and a detailed privacy policy that reads like it was written by actual lawyers rather than copied from a template.
Where GoLove loses a point compared to Kindroid is third-party analytics sharing. They share anonymized usage data — session length, feature usage, behavioral patterns — with analytics providers. Not chat content, not personal details, but metadata about how you use the app. This is standard industry practice and is clearly disclosed in their policy, but it's still your data leaving their servers.
GoLove's NSFW handling is well-structured. Content stays within their encrypted infrastructure, moderation exists but isn't invasive, and the system is designed to keep conversations private by default. Their business model is subscription-based with a generous free tier, and the company is transparent about how the free tier is supported (the subscription revenue covers it, not data monetization).
GoLove also stands out for its approach to NSFW moderation. Unlike Character AI, which bans NSFW entirely, or platforms like Crushon AI that are essentially unmoderated, GoLove strikes a balance: NSFW is fully supported, but with safeguards against the most harmful content types. The moderation system is automated rather than human-reviewed, which means better privacy — no human moderator is reading your chats.
On the technical side, GoLove's infrastructure is cloud-hosted with standard enterprise security practices. They've published their security architecture in their privacy policy, which is more transparency than 90% of their competitors offer. Payment is processed through Stripe, meaning GoLove never directly handles your card details.
For most users, GoLove represents the best practical balance: strong security without Kindroid's premium price point, full NSFW support, and enough transparency to trust the platform. It's the app we recommend most often for people who want both quality and safety. Try GoLove free. For a complete breakdown, read our GoLove review.
What data is actually at risk?
Before diving into what makes an app unsafe, it helps to understand exactly what data you're generating when you use an AI girlfriend app. Most users underestimate the scope.
Your conversation history
Every message you send — flirty, intimate, mundane, or NSFW — is stored on the app's servers. This includes text messages, voice transcripts (if voice chat is supported), and any roleplay scenarios you've created. For most apps, this is stored indefinitely unless you explicitly request deletion.
Generated and uploaded images
If you use image generation features, both your prompts and the generated images are stored. The prompts can be more revealing than the images themselves — they describe exactly what you asked for. If you've uploaded photos (profile pictures, shared images), those are also stored on the server tied to your account.
Behavioral fingerprint
When you use the app, how long your sessions last, what features you engage with, what time zones you're active in, which character types you prefer, how you interact (long messages vs. short), how quickly you respond — all of this creates a behavioral fingerprint. Even anonymized, this pattern is surprisingly unique to you.
Technical metadata
Your IP address (which reveals approximate location), device model, operating system, browser version, screen resolution, language settings. Every app collects this automatically. Combined with behavioral data, it creates a detailed profile even before you type your first message.
Payment information
If you've subscribed to a premium tier, your payment method (or at least a tokenized version of it) is stored either by the app or their payment processor. The transaction record itself — "Payment to CandyAI.com" — is visible on your bank or credit card statement.
Account credentials
Your email address and password (if the app uses password authentication rather than OAuth). If the app stores passwords improperly (unhashed, weakly hashed), a breach exposes not just your AI girlfriend account but potentially other accounts where you reuse that password. Another reason to use a unique, throwaway email and a password you don't use anywhere else.
Character customization data
If you've customized your AI girlfriend's personality, appearance, backstory, or behavioral patterns, that configuration data is stored on the server. This may seem harmless, but it reveals your preferences in ways you might not want public. The characters you create are a reflection of your desires — and that's data too.
The total picture is significant: your identity, your location, your financial information, your sexual preferences, your conversation patterns, and your NSFW content — all linked together in one database. This is why encryption and data practices matter so much in this category of apps. A breach doesn't just expose one piece of information — it exposes the full picture of who you are, what you want, and what you've said in your most private moments.
8. What makes an AI girlfriend app unsafe
Safety isn't just about encryption. There are several risk vectors that most users don't think about until it's too late. Here's what to watch for:
Data leaks and breaches
If an app stores your chats in plain text (no at-rest encryption) and their server gets hacked, your entire conversation history is exposed. This isn't theoretical — data breaches happen constantly. The question is whether your data is encrypted when they happen. With most AI girlfriend apps, the answer is no.
Unencrypted conversations
Every app uses HTTPS (encrypted in transit) — that's just standard web security. But encrypted at rest is what matters. This means your data is encrypted while sitting on the app's servers. Only Kindroid (E2E) and GoLove (AES-256 at rest) have confirmed this. Everyone else? Your sexts are probably stored as readable text on their servers, protected only by access controls.
Selling data to third parties
Most apps share "anonymized" analytics with third parties — session length, feature usage, behavioral patterns. The word "anonymized" does a lot of heavy lifting. Research has shown that behavioral patterns are surprisingly unique. Your usage patterns, combined with other data sources, can potentially re-identify you. The only app that shares nothing is Kindroid.
No data deletion option
Under GDPR, you have the right to request deletion of your data. But some apps make this unnecessarily difficult: no in-app option, vague timelines, the "anonymized data retained indefinitely" loophole. If an app doesn't clearly explain how to delete your data and how long it takes, that's a red flag.
Screenshot and screen recording policies
Some apps don't prevent screenshots or screen recordings. While this is partly a device-level concern, apps that handle sensitive content should at least attempt to restrict screenshot capture in-app. Most AI girlfriend apps don't bother. This matters because screenshots can be leaked, shared, or used for blackmail — especially if they contain NSFW content with identifiable information.
Unclear company ownership
Who actually runs the app? Where are they based? What jurisdiction's laws apply? For some apps in this space, these questions have no clear answers. If you can't figure out who owns the company, you can't assess what laws protect your data, and you can't hold anyone accountable if something goes wrong.
Training on your conversations
Most AI girlfriend apps use your conversations to train and improve their models. This means your messages — including the NSFW ones — become part of a training dataset. Even if your name is stripped, the content lives on. Some companies share these datasets with AI providers or research partners. The only app that structurally prevents this through end-to-end encryption is Kindroid, because they literally cannot access your messages to train on them.
Fake "security" marketing
Watch for apps that claim "military-grade encryption" or "bank-level security" in their marketing without specifics. These are marketing phrases, not technical descriptions. What you want to see: specific encryption protocols (AES-256, E2E), named compliance frameworks (GDPR, SOC 2), and concrete deletion timelines. Buzzwords without technical details are a red flag, not a reassurance.
Aggressive data permissions
Check what permissions the app requests on your phone. Camera, microphone, contacts, location — an AI chatbot shouldn't need any of these unless it offers specific features that require them (like voice chat for microphone). If an app asks for contacts access or location data, that's information it doesn't need and shouldn't have.
On iOS, you can check permissions in Settings > Privacy & Security. On Android, Settings > Apps > [app name] > Permissions. Revoke anything the app doesn't strictly need. A good rule: if the feature that needs the permission isn't one you use, the permission should be revoked. An AI girlfriend app that needs your contacts list is an AI girlfriend app you should uninstall.
No terms of service or vague legal language
Some apps operate without proper terms of service, or with terms so vague they're effectively meaningless. This is a problem because terms of service define the legal relationship between you and the company. Without them, you have no contractual basis for data protection claims. If an app's terms are a paragraph long, or if they include catch-all phrases like "we reserve the right to use your data in any way we see fit," that's a company telling you it doesn't take your rights seriously.
Real-world risks: what actually happens when things go wrong
This isn't theoretical. Here's what happens in practice when an AI girlfriend app has weak security:
Data breach scenario. A hacker gains access to the app's database. If chats are stored in plain text (most apps), they get your email address linked to every message you've ever sent — including NSFW content. This data can end up on dark web forums, be used for blackmail, or be leaked publicly. With encrypted apps like Kindroid, the hacker gets encrypted gibberish.
Company acquisition. A small AI girlfriend startup gets acquired by a larger company. The new owner's privacy policy replaces the old one. Your data, collected under one set of rules, is now governed by different rules. This has happened before in the AI companion space — Replika's NSFW removal was driven by business decisions, not user preferences.
Employee access. Unless chats are end-to-end encrypted, company employees can technically access your conversations. Most companies have internal access controls, but "technically possible" means "will eventually happen" — whether through a rogue employee, a support ticket that accidentally exposes data, or an internal audit that includes chat samples.
Legal subpoena. Law enforcement can subpoena your data from any company that has it. If the app stores your chats in readable form, those chats can be turned over. End-to-end encrypted apps like Kindroid can comply with the subpoena but hand over encrypted data that's useless without your key. This is a meaningful legal protection.
Re-identification from "anonymized" data. Research has repeatedly shown that behavioral patterns — when you're active, how long your sessions are, which features you use — are surprisingly unique. Even without your name attached, your usage fingerprint can potentially be matched against other data sources. The "we anonymize everything" claim is weaker than it sounds.
Payment data exposure. If you pay for a premium tier using your personal credit card, the payment record itself links your real identity to the AI girlfriend service. Even if the app has strong privacy practices, your bank statement reads "CANDYAI.COM" or similar. For maximum separation, use a virtual card or prepaid payment method.
Social engineering attacks. If your AI girlfriend account data is leaked, attackers could use the information for targeted social engineering — "we know what you've been chatting about" followed by extortion demands. This has happened with data from adult sites. The less identifying information tied to your account, the less leverage an attacker has.
Abandoned app scenario. A small AI girlfriend startup runs out of funding and shuts down. What happens to the data on their servers? Ideally, it's deleted. In practice, server images and databases often end up in the hands of whoever acquires the company's assets — or they simply sit on abandoned servers, unpatched and vulnerable. If the company didn't prioritize data hygiene while operating, they're unlikely to handle the shutdown responsibly either.
These scenarios aren't meant to scare you away from AI girlfriend apps entirely. They're meant to illustrate why the safety rating matters: an app with a 5/5 rating structurally prevents most of these scenarios. An app with a 1/5 rating is vulnerable to all of them. Choose accordingly, and take the precautions outlined in our protection guide regardless of which app you use.
9. How to protect yourself
Regardless of which app you choose, these steps dramatically reduce your risk. Think of it as a personal safety stack — each layer adds protection.
Use a burner email
This is the single most impactful thing you can do. Create a separate email (ProtonMail, Tutanota, or even a disposable Gmail) that's not connected to your real name, your work, or your primary accounts. If the app's database is breached, attackers get an email address that leads nowhere instead of to your LinkedIn profile.
Use a VPN
A VPN masks your IP address, which otherwise reveals your approximate physical location and can be used to tie sessions together across services. Mullvad and Proton VPN are solid, privacy-focused choices. Your ISP also won't see that you're visiting AI girlfriend sites.
Never share real personal information
No real name, no city, no workplace, no phone number, no photos of yourself. The AI doesn't need any of this to function, and it adds zero value to your experience. Everything you share is stored somewhere, and you have no control over what happens to it long-term.
Check the privacy policy
Spend 10 minutes reading it. Look for specific answers to: what data is collected, how long it's retained, who it's shared with, and how to delete it. If the policy is under 500 words, that's not a real policy. If it says "we may share data with third parties for business purposes" without naming those third parties — red flag.
Look for data deletion options
Before you sign up, check if the app has in-app account deletion. Check if they mention GDPR. Look for a specific deletion timeline (days, not "reasonable timeframe"). If you can't find deletion instructions within 2 minutes, the app isn't serious about your data rights.
Use a separate payment method
If you're paying for a premium tier, consider using a virtual card (Privacy.com, your bank's virtual card feature, or a prepaid card). This prevents the app from having your real payment details, and it limits financial exposure if there's a breach.
Monitor your accounts
Set up breach monitoring (HaveIBeenPwned, your email provider's built-in alerts) for the email you use with AI girlfriend apps. If it shows up in a breach, you'll know immediately and can take action before damage spreads.
Regularly review and purge
Don't let data accumulate indefinitely. If you've been using an app for months, request a data export to see what they have. Delete old conversations you no longer need. If you stop using an app, delete your account entirely — don't just uninstall it. An uninstalled app with an active account still has your data on its servers.
Avoid linking social accounts
Some apps offer "Sign in with Google" or "Sign in with Apple." While convenient, this creates a direct, verifiable link between your real identity and your AI girlfriend account. The app gets your real name, your profile picture, and sometimes your contacts list — exactly the data you're trying to keep separate.
Use email registration instead, with your burner email. Yes, it's one extra step during signup. That one step saves you from having your Google account permanently associated with an NSFW chatbot. Apple's "Hide My Email" feature is a reasonable middle ground if you want the convenience of OAuth without the full identity exposure — it creates a random forwarding address that doesn't reveal your real email.

Quick safety checklist before you sign up
Before creating an account on any AI girlfriend app, run through this checklist. It takes 5 minutes and can save you from a bad decision:
- Does the app have a privacy policy? If no — walk away. If yes, is it more than 500 words? A real policy is detailed.
- Does the policy mention at-rest encryption? "Encrypted in transit" (HTTPS) is the bare minimum. Look for "encrypted at rest" or specific protocols like AES-256, E2E.
- Is there a clear data deletion process? Check for in-app deletion, a support email for GDPR requests, and a specific timeline (days, not "reasonable timeframe").
- Who owns the company? Can you find a real company name, jurisdiction, and contact info? Anonymous companies are a red flag.
- What permissions does the app request? Camera, microphone, contacts, location — does it need them? Deny anything unnecessary.
- Are there reports of data breaches? A quick search for "[app name] data breach" or "[app name] privacy" tells you a lot.
- What do other users say? App store reviews, Reddit threads, and forum posts often reveal safety issues before they make headlines.
- Does the app have a business model that makes sense? If it's free with no ads and no premium tier, how do they make money? Data is the usual answer.
If the app fails more than two of these checks, reconsider. If it fails more than four, find a different app. Kindroid and GoLove pass all eight. Try GoLove free.
Pro tip: Save this checklist and run through it whenever you try a new app. The AI girlfriend market moves fast — new apps launch every month, and not all of them take security seriously. A 5-minute check can save you from weeks of worry about whether your data is safe.
The bottom line on AI girlfriend safety
"Is AI girlfriend safe?" doesn't have a one-word answer. It has a spectrum — and where you land on that spectrum depends entirely on which app you choose and what precautions you take.
The safest option is Kindroid (5/5): end-to-end encryption, zero data sharing, automatic deletion. If privacy is non-negotiable and you want NSFW capabilities, it's the only answer that doesn't require compromise.
The best balance is GoLove (4/5): strong encryption, GDPR compliance, transparent practices, and a generous free tier. For most users, GoLove provides enough safety without Kindroid's premium price. Try GoLove free.
The safe but limited option is Replika (4/5): established track record, full GDPR compliance, but severely restricted NSFW. Good for companionship, not for intimacy.
Everything rated 3/5 is usable with precautions: burner email, VPN, no real personal info. Everything rated 2/5 or below has gaps we can't recommend ignoring. And 247nsfw at 1/5? Avoid entirely.
The tools to protect yourself exist — burner emails, VPNs, virtual payment cards, data deletion requests. Use them. The apps that deserve your trust have earned it through transparent policies, real encryption, and clear data practices. The apps that haven't? There are better options. Use them instead.
The AI girlfriend market is growing fast. New apps appear monthly, existing apps change their policies, and the regulatory landscape evolves. We update this guide regularly as things change — last update was October 2026. If you notice a change we haven't caught yet, let us know.
Stay safe. Stay private. And read the privacy policy before you share your first message.

Frequently asked questions
Are AI girlfriend apps safe?
It depends entirely on the app. The safety spectrum ranges from excellent (Kindroid at 5/5 — end-to-end encryption, zero data sharing) to genuinely dangerous (247nsfw at 1/5 — no real privacy policy, no encryption, unclear ownership). In between, you have solid options like GoLove (4/5) and Replika (4/5), middling ones like Candy AI (3/5), and concerning ones like Crushon AI (2/5). We rated all 20 apps on a 1-5 safety scale — see the full safety table above. The safest approach: choose an app rated 4/5 or higher, use a burner email, and never share real personal info.
Can AI girlfriend apps steal your data?
Legitimate apps don't "steal" your data in the criminal sense. But the word "legitimate" is doing heavy lifting. Many apps collect far more data than they need to function: chat logs, device fingerprints, behavioral patterns, usage analytics, generated image prompts, and sometimes even your browsing context.
The real risk isn't a company deliberately stealing your data — it's one of three scenarios: a data breach that exposes your conversations because they weren't encrypted at rest; data sharing with third parties (analytics providers, AI training partners) that you didn't know about; or a policy change that retroactively applies new, less protective rules to data you already shared.
The best protection: use an app with confirmed at-rest encryption, like Kindroid (E2E) or GoLove (AES-256). And regardless of the app, follow the protective steps in our how to protect yourself section.
Is it safe to sext with AI?
Yes, if you pick the right app and take precautions. The key question is: what happens to those messages after you send them? With Kindroid, they're encrypted end-to-end and auto-deleted after 7 days — even Kindroid's own team can't read them. With GoLove, they're encrypted at rest with AES-256, which protects against breaches but means the company could theoretically access them. With most other apps? Your NSFW messages sit in plain text on their servers, indefinitely, readable by anyone with database access.
Best practices for safe AI sexting: use a throwaway email, don't include real personal details (name, location, workplace) in your messages, pick an app with confirmed encryption, and use a VPN. The AI doesn't need to know your real name to have a conversation with you.
Do AI girlfriend apps record conversations?
Almost all of them store your conversations on their servers — they need chat history to maintain character context and improve their AI models. The differences that matter are threefold:
How they store it: encrypted (Kindroid: E2E, GoLove: AES-256 at rest) vs. plain text (most others). How long they keep it: Kindroid auto-deletes after 7 days, GoLove purges after 90 days, most others keep chats indefinitely unless you request deletion. Who can access it: Kindroid — literally nobody, not even their team. GoLove — theoretically their team, but encrypted against breaches. Most others — the company, support staff, and potentially third parties through training data or analytics pipelines.
The practical implication: treat every AI girlfriend app as recording your conversations by default, and choose one that at least encrypts what it records. If you want conversations that truly disappear, Kindroid's 7-day auto-delete is the closest thing to ephemeral messaging in the AI girlfriend space.
Which AI girlfriend app is most private?
Kindroid, by a significant margin. Here's what sets it apart from every competitor:
- End-to-end encrypted chats — not even Kindroid's own team can read your messages
- Zero third-party analytics — no Google Analytics, no Mixpanel, no external data sharing
- 7-day auto-deletion — chat logs are purged automatically, no action required
- Immediate account deletion — not "within 90 days," not "in a reasonable timeframe" — immediate
- Transparent privacy policy — specific, detailed, and written in plain language
If NSFW + privacy is your priority, Kindroid is the only real answer. For the best balance of features, price, and privacy: GoLove, which encrypts at rest and is GDPR-compliant. See our full Best for Privacy ranking.
Can AI girlfriend apps see your photos?
AI girlfriend apps cannot access photos on your device that you haven't explicitly shared with the app. They don't have access to your camera roll, your photo library, or any images stored locally — unless you grant camera or photo library permissions and actively choose to share something.
However, if you upload photos to the app — as a profile picture, in a chat message, or as a reference for image generation — those photos are stored on the app's servers and the company can access them. Some image generation apps also store the prompts you use, which can be more revealing than the generated images themselves.
The safest approach: don't upload personal photos. Use the app's built-in avatars and image generation features instead. If you must share an image, strip its EXIF metadata first (most modern phones include GPS coordinates, device info, and timestamps in photo metadata).
Are free AI girlfriend apps safe?
Free tiers from established apps — GoLove, Replika, Character AI — are generally as safe as their paid versions. The security infrastructure doesn't change based on your subscription level; you get the same encryption, the same privacy policy, the same data handling whether you pay or not.
The risk is with unknown, free-only apps that have no reputation, no privacy policy, and no clear business model. If an app is completely free, has no premium tier, and doesn't show ads, ask yourself: how do they make money? The classic rule applies: if you're not paying with money, you might be paying with data. Stick with recognized names that have documented privacy practices and transparent revenue models.
How to delete AI girlfriend data?
Start in the app's settings — most have an "Account" or "Privacy" section with a delete option. If there's no in-app option, you can send a GDPR data deletion request via email. You don't have to be in the EU — most apps apply GDPR globally because it's easier than maintaining region-specific policies.
Deletion timelines vary dramatically across the industry. Kindroid deletes immediately — account gone, data gone, no waiting. GoLove processes requests within 30 days. Replika and Character AI also honor 30-day GDPR timelines. Candy AI and most others promise "within 90 days" without being more specific.
One catch: some apps retain "anonymized or aggregated" data even after account deletion. This means your behavioral patterns (stripped of your name) may live on indefinitely. The "anonymized" loophole is the most common way apps technically comply with GDPR while retaining useful data from your account.
Our recommendation: request explicit written confirmation that your personal data has been purged, and keep that email as a record. If the company can't provide confirmation, that tells you something about their data practices. For detailed deletion steps per app, see our AI Girlfriend Privacy Guide.
